The La Mesa Park and Recreation Foundation’s current capital campaign has a goal to raise $1 million to revamp five community playgrounds in La Mesa. The parks that will benefit from this campaign are Collier, La Mesita, Jackson, Northmont, and Vista La Mesa parks. The fundraising drive, called It’s Child’s Play, was spearheaded by Ed Burr of EDCO and Joe Drew of Drew Ford. To date, the drive has raised over $525,000.
The goal of the project is to create joyful, inviting playgrounds. The use of private funds allows the Foundation to provide a vibrant play experience for families and allows the City to use its limited resources for improving accessibility, lighting and new restrooms in the parks.
This park is located in the northeast quadrant of the City near Amaya Drive and Fletcher Parkway. The new Northmont Park opened in January 2014 and features a interactive playground, resilient surfacing, accessible sidewalk additions, an art tile seat wall and shaded picnic area. The Foundation contributed $180,000 to cover the cost of the playground design, associated mobilization, grubbing, preparation and construction. The playground has a nature theme and is made possible thanks to a donation from Grossmont Center and Bill and Norma Verbeck.
In November 2010, the first playground opened at Jackson Park. It was branded as an automobile themed playground and named after the Drew Ford Family.
